The bracket map

Only the income inside a bracket pays that bracket's rate. Your marker shows how far up the ladder your taxable income reaches — everything below it is taxed at the lower rates, not the top one.

The raise myth

Of your next $1,000 raise, you keep $718. New dollars are taxed at your true marginal rate of 28.2% — not your overall effective rate of 17.2%, and never 100%.

A raise can never shrink your take-home pay — only the new dollars get taxed at the higher rate.

Why your last pays of the year are bigger

Payroll takes CPP and EI only until you reach the yearly maximums. At $85,000 a year, EI stops around pay 22 and base CPP around pay 23 of 26; CPP2 (4%) then runs to the end of the year. The figures above average those deductions over the year, so your early pays come in a little lower and the later ones a little higher. Income tax is withheld evenly throughout.

$85,000 a year at every pay frequency

Bi-weekly is 26 pays a year, so two months each year have three paydays. Budget on two pays a month ($4,969.49) and the third-pay months hand you an extra $2,484.74. Semi-monthly — twice a month, 24 pays — is not the same: each pay is $2,691.81.
